Mezzotint is at the centre of my printmaking practice. I am drawn to its extraordinary tonal range, its velvety blacks and the slow, physical process through which an image emerges from the surface of a copper plate.

The Process
Mezzotint is a printmaking technique that involves piercing a copper plate with a curved, serrated blade until it becomes as rough as sandpaper. The image is then obtained by smoothing some areas of the surface with a sharp blade. These scraped areas will yield progressively lighter grays once the copper matrix is inked and printed on an etching press. More here |
